What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of
an ancient and sophisticated form of medical treatment which
originated in China and has, over time, spread throughout the
world.
Although often described as a method of pain relief, it is
in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses.
Acupuncture can be used alone or combined with other forms
of traditional medicine such as moxibustion, a special form
of heat
treatment, Chinese osteopathy and acupressure, dietary therapy,
herbal medicine and corrective exercises for health and wellbeing.
There are no age restrictions to treatment. The elderly, young
children and pregnant women can all be treated.
How
does Acupuncture work?
A
pulse is more than just a heartbeat
Chinese medicine not only considers the disease symptoms,
but also the age, lifestyle, physical and emotional traits
and all aspects of the individual to create an overall
picture of the person in order to understand and determine
the pattern of disharmony or cause of the condition. In
this way it seeks to treat the whole person and restore
optimum health.
The stimulation of specific areas on the skin with acupuncture
or acupressure, affects the functioning of certain organs
in the body.
What is Acupuncture used for?
It is safe to say that there is no sick person who cannot
be helped o some degree by acupuncture treatment. It is
always worthwhile trying acupuncture for some conditions
which have not been helped by conventional medicine. Some
conditions include:
Acne
Anxiety
Asthma
Back
pain
Depression
Eczema
Giving
up smoking
Hay
fever
Headaches
/ migraines
Infertility
Insomnia
Menopause
Psoriasis
Sciatica
Sports
injuries
Stress
Tennis
elbow
Weight
loss

Acupuncture
is effective for treating most types of pain.
What
does Acupuncture treatment
involve?
The initial treatment may take up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
A detailed medical history and examination of tongue and
pulse will be undertaken.
The acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of
extremely fine, pre-sterilised stainless steel
needles at pre-determined
points on the body surface to restore internal health.
Some people do not feel the application of the needles,
while some feel a slight pinching sensation which only
lasts for one or two seconds.
During the treatment there is often a feeling of peace
or relaxation. This feeling can last for several
hours but does not interfere with normal activities
such
as driving or working.
People often find that they sleep and concentrate
more easily after treatment.
Length
of Acupuncture treatment
and cost
Initial consultation
1 hour 30 minutes £55
Subsequent
treatments 45 minutes £32
Subsequent treatments after 5pm and Saturdays 45
minutes £35
Acupuncture for smoking cessation costs £90 for a
three treatment course.
