Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis, the practice of hypnotherapy, is surrounded by mystery and confusion, which leaves most people very unsure as to what it is, how it works and how it can do much more than just make people look ridiculous on stage. The truth is Hypnosis is a very powerful therapeutic tool that individuals can use to make lasting change in their lives.

Hypnosis is one of the oldest healing techniques. Used by the ancient Egyptians and preserved within the histories of Greece and Rome Hypnosis has been an intimate part of many cultures. Many people through the middle ages used and experimented with hypnosis but with the rise of modern medicine Hypnosis as a healing tool was overlooked and is now only widely known as a form of stage entertainment.

The actual experience of being hypnotised is very difficult to describe, neither asleep nor awake. All hypnotic states are characterised by a tremendously pleasant state of relaxation, an altered state of consciousness into which individuals allow themselves to enter so that desired, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the unconscious mind. Thus, hypnosis is a natural, effective way of making contact with the inner subconscious, a source of many of our problems as well as a tremendous reservoir of unrecognised potential strength and knowledge.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy is a process of guidance. The therapist relies completely upon the consent and cooperation of the client. The therapist exerts no control in the situation and acts much more like a navigator. The aim of Hypnotherapy is to introduce clients to their own resources of power and control. All clients remain in complete control of the sessions and have the ability to terminate the session at any time.

Nobody has ever been hypnotised against his or her will and, even when hypnotised, people can still reject any of the suggestions given if they are not appropriate. No suggestions can be made that will in any way encourage behaviour or thought that is not in the best interest of the client.

It is a common misconception that only certain types of people can be hypnotised. Hypnotic states are natural trance like states that everyone drifts in and out of every day. Daydreaming, middle distancing, watching TV, and the sleepy dazes in the morning are all mild forms of naturally occurring hypnotic states. Hypnotherapy is not a complicated process. Using relaxation and visualisation everyone can enter into deep hypnotic states that open up a wide variety of beneficial applications.
